Sat 1st June D-Day 80th Anniversary - Brockenhurst

Brockenhurst Parish Council is seeking a display of classic and vintage cars as part of an event to celebrate the 80th Anniversary of D-Day being held in the village on Saturday 1st June 2024. The RREC has been asked to co-ordinate the display.

The cars will be displayed in the village centre on a closed road. There will be activities including live music on the nearby football field in the afternoon. The road will be closed from 10am until 3pm and cars are asked to arrive from 10am. There are coffee shops and the Commoners pub in the village centre where refreshments and food can be sought.

Brockenhurst was used as an assembly area for vehicles heading to France and the village was closed by Military Police in order to maintain secrecy. Montgomery addressed troops in the village and he and Eisenhower conducted D-Day planning at the Balmer Lawn Hotel.

If you would like to display your car and take part in this event then please email Steve Wilks at secretary@rrecwessex.org.uk.

Sat 13 July - Charles Rolls Memorial Picnic, Bournemouth

Picnic in the Presence

The memorial plaque to Charles Rolls is situated in the private and security fenced sports field of St Peter's school hidden from public view.

It was created in 1978 by the RREC but not exactly on the crash site as it may not have improved the cricket pitch. On request St Peter's School allows CRHT to attend the site, invariably with a cordon of PMC's. This year we will not follow the format of previous years so it will be an opportunity to enjoy your picnic in the historic area where Rolls once flew. CRHT will have a gazebo to show a recently acquired Edwardian photo album holding a picture of Rolls' last flight.

Access will be from 12.30 to assemble at 12.50 to acknowledge the time of the crash and then relax for picnic time until the gates are closed at 2.30pm. A map is available from CRHT Chairman Stephen Robson via email at crht1910@yahoo.com or telephone 01202 300763.
