We are extremely sad to record the death of committee member Simon Hellberg after a long illness. He had not attended meetings for some time and just before Christmas last year Simon’s wife Monica suggested that he was unlikely to be able to continue so we removed his details from the magazine and the website so that members would not trouble them. I have asked Stuart Bladon who knew him well to pen these words in appreciation of his service to Wessex Section.
Brian Palmer, Chairman
We are sad to record the recent death of Simon Hellberg on Friday, 2nd April, who was an active member of our committee for many years. Only three months earlier his wife, Monica, had also passed away, and Simon died quietly with his sister at his bedside.
With his 2002 Bentley Continental R, Simon attended many of our events, and initiated some. He organised a trip by ferry to Hurst Castle, and arranged for those attending to leave their cars at his home. He also organised several barbecue trips for the Section, and was always first there getting the barbecue fired up ready for everyone to cook their meals. In 2017 he and Monica made their home available for our committee meetings, and if someone seemed to be droning on for too long one could always look across and admire the wonderful view from their huge bay window over the salt marsh to the sea at Keyhaven. In 2019 he was given honorary life membership of the Wessex Section.
He suffered a stroke in 2018, and then chairman Stuart Bladon visited many times to see how he was getting on, but unfortunately there was no progress. At first he would appear in his dressing gown, but after some months he did not emerge. Monica looked after him very well but after her death the end for Simon was just a matter of time.
